Texas Monthly

In December, a team of five, including Texans and immigrants, embarked on a monthslong journey from El Paso to the Gulf of Mexico along the U.S.-Mexico border and the Rio Grande using different modes of transportation: mountain bikes, horses, and canoes.

Their purpose? To document the borderlands before further construction of a border wall and to explore how a physical wall would impact landowners, border culture, wildlife, public lands, and water access.

I can still hear the words of Pres Ronald Reagan "Mr Gorbachev tear down this wall" I guess our grandchildren will judge us harshly for building the wall as they tear it down....

Don't care, still want that big beautiful wall built!

Maybe the wall money would be better spent helping Mexico with their economy and their problems how bow dah

I did a canoe trip along the Rio Grande a number of years ago. I can’t imagine a wall.... or that it would be good for anyone including wildlife. It’s rugged, remote, beautiful, and should remain as such.

If they do damage to the trees/plants along the whole Rio Grande, what is it going to do to the river/wildlife/people?

The immigrants where Texans that immigrated to Mexico? Surely many do, since there are no shitholes.

Texas monthly the liberal magazine of the left strikes again . The one if the partners is the son of Wm. Hobby the ex Lt. Governor Of Texas a staunch Democrat have you not noticed since the magazine was bought by his son’s Investment firm more left , liberal points of view in articles . This is true and you can look up Paul Hobby . Genesis Park L. P. Is the new owner

I remember my first trip to Nogales, Arizona in the 1980s. The fence at the border was chain link and relatives on the American side would drive up in pickups to hoist household appliances over it to their family and friends in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. In many places the Tohono O'Odham people would place a small step ladder over the wire fence that marked the border on their Reservation and go visit the portion of the tribe in Mexico. The multi-billion dollar cartels who engineer tunnels under the border, build their own submarines and utilize both low tech and high tech methods will not be stopped by the Wall. Like so much of the war on drugs, it will be ineffective.

I can’t believe Texans would be supporting some billionaire from New York City and even allowing his government to take away their land and destroy our state. It’s a sad state of affairs. Imagine Texas without chili, tacos, tamales or Tex-Mex! The Texians would have taken up arms!

Texas Liberal Monthly at it again. You and your California imports would love to stop the wall.

Do you really think any land owners along the Rio Grande are just going to hand over their property for a Wall? Texans pride themselves on their land ownership and stewardship, some land has been in families for generations. I just see the whole mess being tied up in courts for years. Illegal immigration won't be stopped by a wall, there are thousands of illegals paying huge costs just to come and give birth here, just for an education and benefits. It's not the wall that will help, it's changing our policies in a changing time. Stop granting citizenship to just any one born here. Stop the benefits, increase deportations, etc.

The wall would screw up the Big Bend area tremendously.

A wall won't stop sh*t!!! Anyone heard of going over or going under? Are we living in the Berlin wall days?

Beautiful landscape. I'm still shocked that any Texan would support the Federal government destroying it with a wall. These aren't the same "small government, States' rights" classic Republicans we used to know.

The pictures from the group are beautiful!

I'm pretty sure those are all the things proponents of the wall want it to do... I can't help but think they just did the Trump administration a favor.

You can bet they will get stopped multiple times by ICE and DPS. The Rio is not a safe river because of law enforcement.

Go Trump

Such a beautiful photo

Unlikely the wall will be built in that area due to the terrain and small population

Do they do this every time a new road is built?

A powerful witness

What an adventure that must have been

Do not mess with Texas.

Really good article
